MTJ Icon: Cher
Turn up the turquoise & turn back time like a legend
Featuring Cher as a jewelry icon is a no-brainer. Not so obvious: deciding which of her infinite looks to spotlight. After all, the singer-actor-raconteur has been turning heads since the mid '60s when she and then-hubs Sonny Bono first hit the airwaves. Ultimately, hippie-chic/early '70s Cher won out. I mean, look at all this jewelry amazingness. It was taken at the Last Tango in Paris film premiere in 1973, the same year the Cali-born beauty released her tenth solo album Half Breed.
Like her personality and singing voice, Cher's over-the-top style is key to her appeal. Or as respected journalist Robin Givhan said in 1999 when the Oscar winner (Moonstruck) was honored for her fashion influence by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA): "She strikes just the right note of contemporary wretched excess."
Layers of turquoise and colorful beads add up to, well, a lot. It’s peak Cher but refreshingly modern. Tell me you couldn't see Zendaya or Vanessa Hudgens rocking something similar today? Those with less daring fashion tendencies, fear not—I got you, babe. Simply pick a few standouts and, voila, your take on boho badass. Sassy hair toss optional.
