Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)
What’s in a name? For Aquarians, a lot of potential confusion, it turns out. The word “aqua” is right there, and this zodiac sign is symbolized by a water bearer. But Aquarius is actually an air sign, characterized by a proclivity for thinking, communicating, and doing.
The tenth largest constellation in the sky, Aquarius was first recorded by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy (yep, the same Ptolemy who theorized that Earth is the center of the universe). Ancient Greek myth connects Aquarius with Ganymede, the cup-bearer to the gods, who collects and dispenses water—symbolically associated with knowledge.
With all of these cerebral connections, it’s no surprise that Aquarians tend to think big—the “Age of Aquarius” (you know the song) imagines an era in which everyone is enlightened and focused on the universal, rather than being bogged down by the petty and day-to-day.
