A diva shines in bold classics and sparkling jewels

From her legendary turn as lead singer of the Supremes to a magnificent half-century-spanning solo career in music, film, TV and stage, the incomparable Diana Ross has had us in awe for, well, forever. While her style has fluctuated throughout the years, she has mostly favored classic accessories— allowing her body-hugging outfits (and enviable figure) to shine.

In the 1960s, she paired matchy-matchy girl-band frocks with feminine brooches and chokers. The ’70s called for slender hoop earrings and diamond tennis bracelets to complement, not overpower, slinky rompers and strapless dresses. In the ’80s and beyond, she moved toward statement necklaces and earrings—one or the other, never both—to balance the plunging necklines and prominent shoulder pads of her form-fitting gowns.

One thing her decades of glamorous fashions have in common: the lady always managed to outdazzle the jewels. What I remember most about Ms. Ross is her 1983 Central Park concert, when she performed through a torrential downpour in a glittery catsuit and diamond studs. ’Cause ain’t no thunderstorm strong enough to keep her from getting to you, baby.

Forget about trying to sound like the icon, but as for her bling game? Take note.
