Few gemstones are as dreamy as an opal. Throughout history, these kaleidoscopic gems have been regarded as the luckiest and most magical gems because of their ability to show so many colors. The ancient Romans believed opals were a symbol of hope and love, while the Greeks believed they gave their owners the gift of prophecy and offered protection from disease.
There are two main categories of opals: precious and common. Precious opals, such as black, white, and boulder opals, are known for their display of flashing rainbows, called “play of color.” Common opals don’t have the same iridescence as precious opals, but are adored for their bold colors, such as fire, blue, and pink opal.
