Girls just want to have jewelry fun

You may recognize her name. She's an MTJ contributor, and she's shown us some favorite pieces from her jewelry box. And Johannah Masters just launched her own jewelry collection.

The inspiration to design her collection sparked after inspiration found her in the form of a Bell Charm necklace from her childhood. If you were also an '80s kid, you'd remember them with their colorful plastic chain necklaces and whimsical charms. I had a few, and thinking about them transports me to a sweet, simpler time. And so, after retreating to childhood memories and jewelry fodder on Instagram during Covid lockdown, Johannah decided to create her contemporary jewelry line celebrating good vibes.

Johannah’s debut collection consists of three Bell Charm-inspired necklaces with electroplated gold chains and charms in juicy colors. The whimsical charms have clasps so you can add, subtract, mix, and match, just like the original Bell Charm necklaces. Some of the charms are sold as single hoop earrings sold at a cool $35 each.

We thought it would be fun for you to get to know Johannah better with some questions around her collection’s themes: Under the Sea, 80’s Child, and I Love Summer. We also have an exclusive 20% off code for MTJ readers good for one week. Use code MTJ20 at checkout.

Under the Sea

Top three favorite beach destinations?

The Greek Islands are my absolute favorite. My most recent trip to Greece was in August of 2019 with my husband to celebrate a big birthday of mine. I’m pretty sure if we were of retirement age, we would have just stayed and never left Paros. Nosara, Costa Rica, is a strong second with its chill surf vibes. Kauai in Hawaii is amazing too!

Favorite sea creature? Most feared sea creature?

The octopus is definitely my favorite sea creature. I’m hoping to make an awesome charm to add to the line. Most feared is the most common of any human, the great white shark (thanks to Jaws and Shark Week).

Go-to tropical cocktail?

If the bartender knows how to make it, I’ll order a Pain Killer, which I discovered at my destination wedding in St. John. I love the pineapple taste mixed with cream and the fact that it’s so strong.

80’s Child

Favorite TV shows growing up?

My family only had two channels, but I managed to watch some really cheesy shows at home or my grandmother's house. The ones I can remember on repeat are: Who's the Boss, Full House, Saved by the Bell, Family Matters, and Perfect Strangers. Cartoons were so good then, from Inspector Gadget to He-Man to Beetlejuice.

Best music video?

Any Madonna video.

What bands would be on your `80s mixtape?

Oh man, this would have to be a very long mixtape: David Bowie, Madonna, Prince, Billy Idol, Talking Heads, Culture Club, Guns N’ Roses, Roxette, Eurythmics, Wham, INXS, Pet Shop Boys, The Cure, The Smiths, Aerosmith, Pet Shop Boys, and Cyndi Lauper.

I Love Summer

If you could "summer" anywhere, where would it be?

Again, Greece! I think I was Greek in a past life because it’s always at the top of my travel list.

What's your most memorable summer?

As much as I love the beach and tropical locations, New York City is the island that truly has my heart, even in the middle of a sweltering summer. So, instead of picking one summer, I’d pick multiple summers when I was in my twenties and thirties when my friends and I would find cheap, fun things to do. Riding bikes on Governors Island, taking the subway to Jones Beach for concerts, trekking out to Long Beach on the train for a beach day, and biking to Sunny’s Bar in Red Hook to drink beer and watch live music. The best.

Favorite ice cream flavor?

Mint chocolate chip all the way!
