Get personal

Charms are a classic for many jewelry lovers. Boundless in themes and styles, charms are about as personal as you can get when it comes to jewelry—flashback to a heart charm engraved with “18th, love mom & dad” from my parents when I graduated high school. Designers agree and have steadily added original trinkets to their collections with ideas spanning spiritual to animal to edible. Maybe it’s time to add something meaningful to your charm bracelet or start anew with something happy. Here’s some inspiration.

Pearly Tiny Joys

Susan Alexandra is known for her neon beaded bags toted by fashionable ladies coast to coast, but her jewelry stands out too. This charm necklace is a best seller offering kitschy handmade charms that you can choose attached to a delicate strand of pearls. Standout accessory found.

Make Your Own “Pearly Tiny Joys” Necklace, $98-$275 (depending on the number of charms) at Susan Alexandra

Heart of Glass

Sandra Alexandra started her namesake brand in 2019 as a passion project. A trip to Japan sparked the idea for a collection that embraces natural materials like lampwork glass and cultured pearls. Sandra works between her London studio and Spain, where artisans make her Heart of Glass earrings in Barcelona.

Itty Bitty Dangle

There is no lack of creativity in Zoë Chicco’s eponymous line, and that includes charms. Case in point: a classic style turned contemporary in this dainty dangle necklace that’s ideal for layering.

Happy Girlfriend

Mercedes Salazar likes to tell stories and honor artisans through her jewelry. This bracelet is inspired by charms and amulets throughout the world that “radiate positive energy” and is handmade by artisans in her Bogotá-based atelier.

Gold-plated bronze, crystals, vintage beads, and pearls “For a Happy Girlfriend” bracelet, $35 at Mercedes Salazar

Herr Charms

WALD Berlin founders Joyce Binneboese and Dana Roski created a fair-trade collective in Germany to empower women through making handmade jewelry. The designs embrace Germany and also ideas from the founders’ travels across the globe. These playful charms stem from those travels and a mutual love for cheer with blogger Karoline Herr, aka Frollein Herr.
