Baxter's Fine Jewelry
Third-generation jewelry experts with the best coffee in Rhode Island.
Meet Baxter’s
Established in 1960 by Robert and Gloria Messerlian, Baxter’s started on the kitchen table of the couple’s home. Robert was a salesperson for a jewelry manufacturer and in 1969 he bought the building where the jewelry store currently resides. They bought as much equipment as they could afford, and started a jewelry manufacturing factory. The company evolved into retail when their son, Paul, joined the business in 1987.

Baxter’s Insights
“I love luxury, and dealing with something that is a want. The more time and effort you put into it makes you appreciate it in the end. I like the concept of making things, and we can do anything that you can think of.”
- Janina Messerlian
Baxter’s Story
Paul expanded the retail division into what has become one of Rhode Island’s largest, premier jewelry stores. Paul’s daughter, Janina Messerlian, joined the company in 2018 to carry the family business into the future.
Jewelry manufacturing is the backbone of Baxter's. They understand how to make jewelry versus a jeweler who buys and sells jewelry. A full-service store, they have a CAD (computer-aided design), laser machines, and laser engravers on premises—they’re at the forefront of jewelry technology.
Social Style
Baxter’s is very selective about their diamonds
All their diamonds are certified by either GIA (Gemological Institute of America) or Forevermark laboratories. They hand-pick every diamond they use—they never purchase diamonds unseen. The path to becoming a Baxter’s diamond starts while it is still in rough crystal form. Only 10% of the world’s diamonds make it through to the cutting process, and of those, Baxter’s selects only the very best for their overall value.
Through third-party validations using a database of millions of diamonds, their Bright Crystal diamonds are scanned and given a performance evaluation based on how they compare against all the diamonds with the same characteristics. This precise grading allows Baxter's to price their diamonds confidently.
Comfortable. Trusting. Relationship.
Those are the three words Paul uses to describe Baxter's. In the store’s sixth decade, Baxter’s believes the reason they’ve been around so long is because they’ve never taken the honor and trust of their customers for granted. Their goal has always been to make the jewelry purchasing experience what it should be: comfortable and exciting at the same time. That means creating an atmosphere where customers feel relaxed and unintimidated. It also means willing to do whatever is necessary to provide someone with a piece of forever jewelry.
Giving Back
Baxter’s contributes to programs benefiting children whose lives have been affected by illness, abuse, or neglect through Jewelers for Children.
The Fifth C
Game-changer: a coffee shop on premises called The Fifth C, a riff off the four C’s of diamonds with the fifth C being coffee. Having a coffee shop inside their store was inspired by Baxter’s goal of being a comfortable destination.
